1. Oatmeal Gets Creative

The old stand-by gets a make-over!

Start your trip by shopping in your grocery store’s bulk section. Pick up quick oats to start as your base.

To each individual portion of 1/2 cup oats (in a small Ziploc baggie) add any combination of the following: flax seeds, chia seeds, brown sugar, cocoa powder, dried fruit, chopped nuts, cinnamon, Craisins, raisins, coconut or chocolate chips. Add a couple tablespoons of powdered milk to each packet if you like your oatmeal creamy. You’ll create your own winning combination.

Boil your water, stir into a bowl with oatmeal combo for 1 minute and chow down.

2. Breakfast Burrito

You’ll need a freeze-dried chili mix and tortillas.

Prepare chili according to package directions, using only enough water to keep it thick. When fully cooked, spoon onto a tortilla, roll up and enjoy.

TIP: Save leftover salsa packets the next time you’re at a fast-food Mexican place to add to your burritos.

You can also add freeze-dried cooked eggs.

3. Homemade Granola

This is another make-your own-and-get-creative recipe.

In your grocery store’s bulk section, pick up some: rolled oats, wheat or spelt, and any dried fruit, nuts and seeds you like to make it your own. The rest you’ll probably have on hand at home.

Follow this easy recipe from Chowhound at home. Bring it along in single-serving size Ziplocks and eat either with powdered milk or dry.

4. Bannock/Fry Bread

Bannock is about as traditional as it comes, which makes it a must-try for your next canoe or kayak adventure.

Here’s a basic recipe: 1½ cups all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon baking powder, ½ teaspoon salt, 2 tablespoons melted butter or oil, ¾ cup water. You can add your choice of seasoning, too.

Measure flour, salt, and baking powder into a large bowl. Stir to mix. Pour melted butter or oil and water over the flour mixture. Stir with a fork to make a ball. Turn dough out on a lightly floured surface, and knead gently about 10 times.

TIP: Bring along a plastic flexible cutting mat for a kneading and cutting surface. They’re super light and easy to pack.

Pat into a flat circle 3/4-to-1-inch thick.

Cook in a greased frying pan over a medium fire, about 10 minutes on each side.

5. Milk and Cereal

Our childhood revisited.

Bring along your favorite childhood cereal—one you haven’t indulged in for years (the one your Mom would only buy on special occasions) and add powdered milk.

Instant childhood—minus the Saturday morning cartoons!

BONUS: Wild Blueberry Pancakes

For some extra tastiness, plan your wilderness trip to coincide with berry season!

Bring along an add-water-only pancake mix, a little butter or oil and a frying surface. For a little extra heartiness, add 1/3-to-1/2 cup dry quick oats. Pick ripe blueberries, raspberries or other favorite wild berry and add them to your batter.
